These were two troubled periods for the island, which was hit by the repercussions of the French Revolution and Empire wars. The situation was particularly tense when the Colonial Assembly established by revolutionary powers refused to abolish slavery. The name Bourbon Island was changed into Reunion Island in 1793. However Napoleon changed the island’s status again by placing it under the authority of a Captain General residing at Ile de France (Mauritius). The Colonial Assembly was abolished and slavery re-established in 1802. The name Reunion Island was changed into Bonaparte Island in 1806. The name Bourbon Island was restored in 1814.
